Salisbury's Hughes, Christopher Newport's Ware Collect CAC Field Hockey Weekly Accolades

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) has announced its weekly awards following the first week of the 2019 field hockey season. Christopher Newport sophomore Mauri Ware earned CAC Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while Salisbury senior Jillian Hughes claimed CAC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mauri Ware - Christopher Newport

Christopher Newport sophomore Mauri Ware joined an exclusive club after scoring a goal during each of Christopher Newport's two games last week. Finding the back of the cage against No. 4 Messiah and No. 9 Rochester, she became just the fourth Captain in program history to score in back-to-back games against nationally-ranked opponents and only the second one to accomplish the feat against a pair of top-10 foes. Her first collegiate goal cut the squad's deficit in half during the second quarter of the team's battle at Messiah on Friday, while her second one proved to be the game-winner in a 1-0 triumph against Rochester at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex on Sunday.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jillian Hughes - Salisbury

Salisbury senior Jillian Hughes was named the MVP of the Connie Harnum Classic over the weekend at Susquehanna University after the Sea Gulls only allowed one goal in two games in the tournament. The Sea Gulls stifled the Kean (3-0) and Wilkes (4-1) offenses with only 11 combined shots in two games, only six were on target.

HONORABLE MENTION

OFFENSE: Amanda Boclair (YCP), Rachel Domanico (SAL), Celina Kaufman (SMC)

DEFENSE: Olivia Davis (CNU), Jillian Lawrence (UMW), Kelbey Egerland (SMC)

During the competition, she made 10 saves while recording her sixth career shutout. During the game, she made five saves on penalty corner attempts, including one in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory. Her 10 total stops established a new career-high and equaled the most by a Captain since 2015...York's Amanda Boclair scored York's lone goal in their 3-1 loss to #9 Rochester on Friday in York's lone game of the week...Salisbury's Rachel Domanico was named to the Connie Harnum Classic All-Tournament team after recording two goals and an assist in Salisbury's 3-0 over Kean on Friday...St. Mary's Celina Kaufman led the Seahawks with four points off of two goals in a 4-0 victory over Goucher to start the season.
