Mary Washington and Christopher Newport each secured victories in the first round of the CAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament on Wednesday, earning spots in Saturday's semifinals.
Third-seeded Mary Washington broke open a one-goal halftime score with a 10-0 second half en route to a 16-5 victory over sixth-seeded Frostburg State. With the win, the Eagles (14-4) advance to the semifinals for the 12th straight year and will meet second-seeded Salisbury (11-5) on Saturday in Salisbury, Md.
Junior Holly Hudson and senior Kelsey Vincent each scored three goals and sophomore Mackenzie Maguire added two goals and four assists to lead the 14th-ranked Eagles. Frostburg State ends its year at 6-11 following the loss.
Fifth-seeded Christopher Newport scored twice in the final minute to overcome a one-goal deficit and defeat fourth-seeded St. Mary's 8-7 in a thrilling matchup at Seahawk Stadium. The Captains (11-7) advance to Saturday's semifinals, where they will travel to top-seeded York (13-2) for a noon matchup.
Trailing by one with less than 60 seconds left in regulation, Samantah Wettengel tallied the equalizer for the Captains before Carly Wilson sealed the win with 28 seconds left on a free position shot. Meaghan Galvin led the Captains with two goals, two assists, three draw controls, two groundballs, and two caused turnovers. The Seahawks conclude the year at 9-9 with the loss.
