Christopher Newport and Southern Virginia will battle on Saturday (Feb. 23) in Newport News inside the Freeman Center on the campus of Christopher Newport University for the 2019 CAC Women's Basketball Tournament Championship.
Top-seeded Christopher Newport overcame a slow start to pull away in the middle portions of the contest and defeat #4 Mary Washington by a 72-53 final tally. CNU led by 11 at the break before dominating the third quarter (21-5) and putting the contest out of reach. The Captains were guided by Jessica Daguilh's 15 points and six rebounds, while Zhara Tannor added 13 points and eight steals in the win. UMW's Erika Carter recorded a game-high 19 points for the Eagles.
The second-seeded Southern Virginia Knights held off a late, second-half charge from #3 Salisbury to earn a spot in Saturday's title game as SVU notched a 66-60 victory. The Knights outrebounded the Sea Gulls by a 39-29 margin and shot 45.5 percent ifor the contest. SVU was guided by Savanna Christensen's game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Bryndie Ballam posted 15 points of her own.
The Captains and Knights split their season series with the home team prevailing in each matchup. SVU posted a 58-54 win on Jan. 16 before CNU posted a 69-47 victory on Feb. 6.
