February 17, 2008 Rookies of the Year Sarah Crockett and Steve Clendenin Lead Mary Washington To 2008 CAC Swim Titles

Freshmen Sarah Crockett and Steve Clendenin were named the CAC Rookies of the Year and helped lead Mary Washington to their 18th-straight women's championship and 8th-straight men's crown at the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference Swimming Championship Sunday at St. Mary's College.

The two team trophies, along with the women's cross country title, give Mary Washington three CAC Championships during the 2007-08 season.

The UMW women, who have won every championship since the inception of the CAC, compiled 924 points to capture the crown.  Host St. Mary's (518.5) outdueled Marymount (501) and Salisbury (446.5) for second place in the women's standings.

The Eagles won five out of six races on Sunday's final day of competition, including the 200 backstroke by Crockett (2:08.37).

Other UMW women's wins Sunday included Soph. Bridget Travers in the 1,650 freestyle, Sr. Kristin LaCoe in the 100 freestyle, Sr. Lorena de la Garza in the 200 butterfly and the 400 freestyle relay team.

Marymount junior Ashley Smith, who captured the gold in Sunday's 200 breaststroke final (2:27.91), was selected by the CAC Coaches as the Women's Swimmer of the Year.  St. Mary's Coach Andre Barbins was named by his peers as the CAC Coach of the Year.

On the men's side, Mary Washington grabbed the team gold for the eighth-straight year, posting 831.5 points to outdistance York (606), Salisbury (477), Marymount (431) and St. Mary's (392.5) for the title.

Clendenin highlighted the evening with a CAC record performance in the 200 backstroke (1:54.03), breaking the mark set in 1996 by John Cooper of Catholic University. Classmates Brad Dunn (1,650 freestyle) and Ian McCormick (200 butterfly) also picked up individual wins Sunday for the Eagles.

York senior Steven Fulcher, who anchored the Spartans gold medal 400 freestyle relay to end the competition, was named the Male Swimmer of the Meet.  Gallaudet coach Bill Snape, whose team edged Hood for sixth place in the team standings by just two points, was named the 2008 Coach of the Year.
