Defending champion Mary Washington won four individual events and one relay to gain a 100-point lead in both the men's and women team standings after the first day of the 2008 Capital Athletic Conference Swimming Championships at St. Mary's College.
The Eagles garnered 292 points in five women's events to take the early lead over host St. Mary's (164). On the men's side, UMW compiled 268.50 points to take the top spot over York (160).
Freshmen Sarah Crockett (500 freestyle) and sophomore Michelle Sawyer (200 IM) picked up individual gold medals for the UMW women while freshmen Ian McCormick (500 freestyle) and Stephen Clendenin (200 IM) touched the wall first for the Eagles men. Mary Washington also placed first in the men's 200 freestyle relay.
St. Mary's took top honors in three events, including junior Eleanor Koerner in the 50 freestyle, the women's 200 freestyle relay team and the women's 400 medley relay team.
Other first place performances included York senior Steven Fulcher in the 50 freestyle and the York men's 400 medley relay team, anchored by Fulcher.
Action continues Saturday (2/16) and Sunday (2/17), with trials in the morning (10 a.m.) and finals in the evening (6 p.m.).
